Cultural visits of the cities and archaeological sites

Speaking of more to do than swimming and sunbathing, please note that Kato Gouves is only 19 km far from the main city of the island, Heraklion. Heraklion has got some amazing architectural sites, as its architecture has been greatly influenced by the Venezians. Once there, do not forget to visit the pretty Venetian fortress at the edge of the traditional and picturesque fishing port.
Then walk up towards the centre of the city to the National Museum of Heraklion for a chance to see for yourselves the cultural heritage of the Minoan Civilasation, in the form of everyday items the Minoans used, jewellery, pots of olive oil and honey, religious items and much much more that will help you understand why the minoan civilisation is regarded as one of the most important ever.
To top your visit to the museum you can also visit the archaeological site of Knossos, the Minoan Palace of King Minos, which is only 30 minutes bus ride from the centre of the city (12km).
A little bit further afield, there is the town of Agios Nikolaos, (50 Km from the house, to the east).
You will be allured by its small fishing port and the lake which joins the sea, almost in the centre of the city. Another 50 km to the east and you will find yourselves in Elounda, famous cosmopolitan for its natural beauty landscape and the cosmopolitan atmosphere to it.
However, if it is the mountains that take your fancy, the plateau of Lassithi, will be the place for your to visit.Discover Lassithi’s famous white wing flourmills, scattered in fields of olive and vine trees, visit small, traditional taverns to taste the local cuisine, and then walk up to the “Psychro” cave, where legends says that Zeus was born. It is a spectacular day out, as you visit some of the highest mountains on the island and then take a walk underground in the cave through a forest of stalagmites and stalactites….Highly recommended...
